What is a safer space? Why is Ladyfest Philly choosing to implement a Safer Space Policy?
In line with our mission statement, Ladyfest Philadelphia is choosing to implement a safer space policy. A safer space is a supportive, non-threatening environment that encourages open-mindedness, respect, and a willingness to learn from others, as well as physical and mental safety. Our safer space policy is intended for the benefit of everyone involved in Ladyfest Philadelphia in any way (as supporters, organizers, volunteers, performers, speakers, and attendees).
Ladyfest Philly Safer Space Policy
- Be mindful of your speech and actions and the effect they may have on others.
- Do not make assumptions about people’s identities in terms of gender, race, sexuality, abilities, class, or background.
- Respect people’s boundaries and always interact with others’ consent, be it physically, emotionally, or verbally.
- Carry these guidelines through all forms of communication, physical and non-physical: in person, by telephone, and on the Internet.
Any action that compromises the ability of Ladyfest Philly to succeed in the mission of the festival will be considered a violation of the Safer Spaces policy. Violence, harassment, and hate speech will not be tolerated in any form and perpetrators will be required to leave.
If you have experienced any discrimination or a breach of your safety or consent, Ladyfest Philly organizers will be on hand to support you to the best of our abilities.
In recognition and rejection of substantive cultural and structural oppressions, certain workshops offered during the festival are designed to meet the specific needs of cis-women, trans, genderqueer, intersex, or queer individuals. Such workshops noted on the Ladyfest Philly website and in the program and are limited to members of these communities.
Ladyfest Philly is aware that not everyone is familiar with the multiple levels and intersections of oppression. If you have questions about the specifics of this policy, we are prepared to communicate with you in a supportive and constructive way. We hope that people choose to implement safer space policies in every aspect of their lives, carrying it beyond Ladyfest.
